Cheap Teeth Whitening At Home

 photo of cheap-teeth-whiten-at-home

Crest White Strips - love 'em or hate 'em? I can't use white strips because they make my teeth SO sensitive. Unbearably sensitive. I tried the Target brand's version of white strips and found  that while they didn't make me very sensitive, it didn't really make a difference in the whiteness of my teeth. I gave up. I stopped trying to whiten my teeth. While my regular mouthwash/toothpaste routine keep my teeth white, I feel like I need a little boost every now and then.
If you're on Pinterest and you come across the super popular pins about how to whiten your teeth at home BE CAREFUL! I saw one that had been repinned a kajillion times and it told you to use LEMON JUICE before brushing your teeth - DON'T DO THAT! Oh my goodness, my teeth hurt just reading the caption underneath that pin. That is one of the most terrible things you can do. Soaking your teeth in acid and then brushing them?! You've GOT to be kidding me! You shouldn't be brushing your teeth for at least an hour or so after eating/drinking acidic foods! Sorry, that just horified me.

On to the at home teeth whitening that will cost you $0.98. Yeah, 98 cents!

Hydrogen Peroxide.

Loot at the ingredients list of those $60 white strips. Hydrogen Peroxide is a top one. and I can get a fairly large bottle for under $1.

Here's How I Keep Them Pearly-White:

♥ I normally use my Crest 3D White mouth wash BEFORE brushing my teeth morning and night. (Yes, before. Everytime.) I also use the Crest 3D White toothpaste on a regular basis. These 2 products have kept my teeth white for years. You just have to keep using it regularly. I will probably never use anything else consistently.
♥When I feel like I need a little pick me up for my teeth I just use hydrogen peroxide as a little step in between mouth wash and brushing my teeth.

  • I just put about a capful of it in my mouth and swish it around as if it were a mouth wash (it will foam up a little-which is kind of weird at first.)
  • For about a minute I hold it at the front of my mouth so that it coats the teeth I would normally use white strips on (the teeth visible when you smile). I used to paint it on the front teeth with a Q-tip, but this works just as well if not better and is faster.
  • At first, you can do this every couple days for only a week or so. After your teeth are pretty and white you only need to do this once every couple weeks/month.

Super simple, cheap, great results, and has never given me sensitivity. Can't beat that!

Let me know if you try this or what you use to get head-turning and glistening pearly-whites!

  1. I'm what they call a bit of a "bleachorexic" and am obssessed with whitening my teeth. I know it's so bad for the enamel but I just can't help it, I'm utterly addicted. I'll definitely be testing this out, as it is sooo much cheaper than the Crest whitestrips.

  2. You def should; I've saved so much money! Just don't go crazy! I like how I can touch up every few weeks just by adding an extra minute to my routine. To help your enamel you should check out Sensodyne's Pronamel toothpaste. That helped me a lot as I used to be a "bleachorexic" too! The trick is to use it at night and not to rinse it so that it sets on your teeth all night (sounds gross, I know but it works!)

  4. I personally recommend six monthly visits to a dental hygienist for a really good clean. In between visits there is some natural help. Here are a few suggestions:

A glass of water after eating to rinse away food debris.
Strawberries contain a natural whitening properties.
Chewing raisins increases saliva, a bit like chewing gum.
Milk, yoghurt and cheese contain properties which promote strong tooth enamel. A lot of staining is down to enamel loss.
And finally of course, brushing and flossing.

  5. “If you're on Pinterest and you come across the super popular pins about how to whiten your teeth at home BE CAREFUL!”—Thanks for the reminder, Angela! As much as possible, try to read the instructions carefully. Sometimes, we tend to overlook safety precautions because of the rush for trying out something new. We sometimes get consumed by the idea of instant results that we try to expedite the process, without thorough research and skipping professional advice.
